Matthew and David Design is a design led studio with a reputation for creative and innovative architecture, interior and landscape design dedicated to creating buildings that interpret the clients brief in unique and inventive ways.
Established in 2016, we work over a range of scales and sectors specialising in arts projects, urban interventions, refurbishments, extensions and larger scale residential projects.
Having both studied fine art and architecture our collaborative approach to design is a holistic one grounded in the belief that a successful piece of architecture should be a finely crafted work of art, which has a positive environmental, social and cultural impact.
Matthew Baker
Director
Matthew studied Fine Art at Liverpool Polytechnic before studying Architecture at East London University, and has over 20 years’ experience working for leading practices CZWG Architects and Foster Wilson Architects, where he was an Associate.
Matthew has a wealth of experience in performing arts and cultural projects as well as high end residential and commercial developments giving him an in depth understanding of the cultural and commercial sectors.

Whilst at Foster Wilson Architects, he was the the Project Designer and Associate responsible for a number of major cultural projects, such as the Centre for Education & the Arts at the American School in London, a £4.5m redevelopment of their existing school theatre, Trafalgar Studios, a £1m transformation of the former Whitehall Theatre into a contemporary open stage venue, RIBA Finalist and Civic Trust Award winning Carnival Village, a £3m new build Carnival Arts Centre, RIBA, Civic Trust & RICS Award winning Quarry Theatre at St Luke’s, a £4.3m restoration and extension to a listed church to create a new performing arts centre for Bedford School, and New London Architecture and RIBA Award winning Brixton House Theatre, a £18m new build theatre with seven multi-use studios and creative works spaces.
As co-director of Matthew and David – Design he is responsible for and involved with every aspect of the running of the practice and has a particular interest in seeking to deliver social and environmental benefits through design.
David Grinaway
Director
David’s architecture career began at the Portsmouth College of Art where he developed an interest in sculpture and the built environment which led him to the University of East London where he continued to study architecture.
Over the past 20 years David has worked at several leading architectural practices including Anthony Hudson Associates, Future Systems, CZWG Architects and Foster Wilson Architects, where he was an Associate.

Whilst at Foster Wilson Architects David was project designer on numerous arts projects including the RIBA award winning Parabola Arts Centre for the Cheltenham Ladies College, a £6m refurbishment and extension of a Grade II* Regency Villa to provide a new auditorium and backstage accommodation, The RIBA 2014 South East Regional Award Shortlisted Caryl Churchill Theatre for the Royal Holloway University of London, a £2.4m refurbishment and extension of Grade II Listed house to provide new 175 seat auditorium, workshops and rehearsal studios and The St. James Theatre in Victoria which was the first new built theatre to open in London’s West End for 30 years.
David has also worked in the film industry as an Art Director and Production Designer where he enjoyed the immediacy of set design and the collaborative approach to working with a crew on location and in the studio.
As co-director of MAD–D David shares all aspects of the practice management and project delivery. He has a particular interest in the role of both traditional and emerging technologies in architecture and design.
Marie Pierre Avgeri
Architect
Marie-Pierre studied Architecture at Aristotle University in Greece where she was awarded a Diploma with distinction in 1999. During her studies she spent a year studying in Paris at Paris-La Villette as part of a student exchange programme. In 2001 she completed an M Arch degree in the Bartlett School of Architecture in Architecture Design under professor Peter Cook.

Marie-Pierre has over 15 years experience working in Athens and London for leading practices. She met Matthew and David at Foster Wilson Architects where she worked on the Carnival Arts Centre, a £3m new build Civic Trust Award winning community centre and was Project Architect for the Salisbury Playhouse Extension, a 1.2m new built rehearsal studio and community space. She then worked for Walters and Cohen, a leading practice in educational and cultural sector. She was involved in the delivery of Elms Park Primary School (4.8m contract value) and Project Architect for Highlands Primary School (4.5m contract value), two new build BCSE award winning exemplary schools, located in Havering Essex.
Whilst working at Matthew and David – Design Marie has been involved with numerous arts and residential projects.
Marie has passion for architectural design especially when it serves the tight constrains of community projects. Through her experience she has gained technical knowledge and a solid understanding of construction. She believes that good design and detailing is the prerequisite for the success of a scheme within the time and budget constrains without compromising on quality.
India Aspin
Architect
India studied Architecture at the University of Bath, followed by the University of Sheffield. She went on to gain her professional qualification (Part 3) at London Metropolitan University, whilst working at Foster Wilson Architects on a range of performing arts and education projects, including the RHUL Caryl Churchill theatre, the Quarry Theatre as St Lukes, Bedford and the newly opened Brixton House Theatre.

Following her work in the cultural sector, India wet on to spend a number of years gaining experience in the private residential sector, working for Simon Whitehead Architects, focusing on high-end residential renovations and extensions in London and the South East.
India has most recently been developing her design for a temporary treehouse for Kew Gardens, themed around the concept of ‘Play’, having won an international architecture competition. The CLT and timber treehouse will be built early next year and will be open for visitors from April – September 2023. At MAD-D India plays a key role during all workstages on a number of arts and residential projects.
