Caryl Churchill Theatre - Royal Holloway University of London

Whilst at Foster Wilson Architects David was responsible for this project which included a new theatre extension to the listed Sutherland House, which houses the University’s Department of Drama & Theatre. The extension, which replaces an existing studio theatre provides a flexible galleried studio theatre with a seating capacity of 175, two rehearsal studios, a workshop and dressing rooms,
linked to the existing house by a single storey glazed foyer.

The auditorium has two storey high windows set within its apdsidal end wall and a large roof light above the main stage. This enables the space to be naturally lit for teaching / rehearsals or used as an artificially lit theatre for performances. Despite large areas of glazing the theatre achieves a high level of acoustic isolation which is required due to its proximity to a main road and Heathrow flight path.
