Trafalgar Studios at the Whitehall Theatre

Whilst at Foster Wilson Architects Matthew was responsible for this project which involved the remodelling of a Grade II listed 1930’s Art Deco theatre to create two separate studio theatres from what was a single space auditorium.

Following careful negotiations with Westminster Council and English Heritage, a scheme was developed involving light-weight, reversible structural interventions which would have minimum impact on the theatre’s Art Deco interior.

The original circle front is extended forward to meet a new raised stage to create the 380 seat Studio 1 whilst the old stalls have been converted into the 100 seat Studio 2, with new dressing rooms in the stage basement and the insertion of two platforms lists to provide wheelchair access to both studio theatres.
